A little about Thane Creek & the flamingos.

Thane Creek, located in the state of Maharashtra, India, is a large wetland area that serves as a critical habitat for various species of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is renowned for its significant role in conserving and safeguarding the habitat of numerous avian species.

The sanctuary is primarily known for its large population of flamingos. The flamingos that visit Thane Creek primarily belong to two species: the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) and the lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor). These birds arrive at Thane Creek during the winter months, seeking refuge from the freezing temperatures of their breeding grounds in distant parts of Asia and Africa.

The arrival of flamingos at Thane Creek is truly a mesmerising sight to behold, and it has been described as an “bloom of pink”. The mudflats and shallow waters are transformed into a sea of pink as they gather in large flocks. Their synchronised movements, as they wade through the water in search of food, create a spectacle that attracts numerous nature enthusiasts, photographers, and birders.

Flamingos primarily feed on small invertebrates, such as crustaceans and algae, which they filter out from the water using their specialised beaks. Thane Creek's brackish waters provide a plentiful source of food for these birds, ensuring they can replenish their energy reserves before continuing on their long migratory journeys.

Apart from their visual appeal, flamingos also play a crucial ecological role in Thane Creek. As filter feeders, they help maintain the balance of the local ecosystem by controlling the population of certain organisms, preventing excessive algae growth, and improving water quality.

1. Carry the correct camera gear

Embarking on a photographic adventure to explore the wonders of Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary demands more than just curiosity and enthusiasm. Equipping yourself with the right camera gear is essential to having a good experience at the mangrove forest. With fast-moving birds and the constant motion of the boat as you navigate the creek, a camera with a fast autofocus (AF) system is crucial. It ensures you can capture those fleeting moments with precision and clarity. birds are moving fast, and if you take a boat, you will also be moving with the waves.

To capture the birds from a distance and truly appreciate their intricate details, a telephoto or super-telephoto lens is highly recommended. Given that much of the action takes place 50 metres or more away, a focal length of at least 400mm becomes essential for those up-close and personal shots.

I carried my Sony A7R5 body, and the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens, which suited my needs perfectly.

Considering that this specialised equipment can be quite expensive to purchase, renting is an attractive option for many photographers (myself included). Don't forget to bring along a trusty pair of binoculars on your trip to the sanctuary. With the vast expanse of Thane Creek and the diverse habitats it encompasses, binoculars become an essential companion for any nature enthusiast.

When not shooting, binoculars will allow you to still see the birds in detail, without having to get extremely close and encroach on their personal space.

3. Format your memory cards before leaving home

One essential and often forgotten step in preparing for a successful photographic expedition is to format your memory cards before leaving home.

Formatting your memory cards serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it clears all previous data, ensuring that you have enough storage space for capturing the breathtaking moments that await you at the sanctuary.

On my trip,I shot around 90GB of uncompressed RAW photographs. My A7R5 has a dual SD/CF Express card slot, so after formatting, I could comfortably fit all my photos, without stressing.

Secondly, formatting your memory cards helps maintain their performance and longevity. It optimises the card's file system, improving its efficiency and reducing the chances of data corruption.

Typically, the formatting option can be found in the camera's menu settings. Select the appropriate memory card and follow the prompts to format it.

Remember that formatting erases all data on the card, so it is vital to back up any important files before proceeding.

4. Use eye tracking AF

This feature is particularly valuable when photographing birds in flight or capturing fast-paced action, as it tracks the subject's eyes with remarkable accuracy, delivering striking results.

5. Shoot on Hi+ drive mode

The Hi+ drive mode, also known as high-speed continuous shooting or burst mode, enables your camera to capture a rapid series of images in quick succession.
